How to become a boat leader in 20 steps
If you want to sail a boat or a yacht in Croatia, you need to have a valid license for boat leaders. This license allows you to operate vessels up to 30 meters long and up to 12 nautical miles from the coast. To obtain this license, you need to pass a theoretical and practical exam at one of the authorized schools for boat leaders. Here are 20 steps that will help you prepare for the exam and become a boat leader.
Learn the basic terminology of boats and navigation. You need to know the names and functions of different parts of a boat, such as the hull, the keel, the rudder, the mast, the sails, etc. You also need to know how to measure distances, speeds, directions, and positions at sea.
Study the rules of navigation and safety at sea. You need to know how to avoid collisions, how to communicate with other vessels, how to use lights and signals, how to follow traffic lanes and regulations, how to deal with emergencies and distress situations, etc.
Get familiar with the nautical charts and instruments. You need to know how to read and use nautical charts, compasses, GPS devices, depth sounders, VHF radios, etc. You also need to know how to plot courses, determine positions, calculate distances and bearings, etc.
Learn the basics of meteorology and sea conditions. You need to know how to interpret weather forecasts, wind directions and speeds, wave heights and periods, tides and currents, etc. You also need to know how to adapt your sailing plans and actions according to the weather and sea conditions.
Practice your sailing skills on a boat or a simulator. You need to know how to maneuver a boat under different conditions, such as docking, anchoring, mooring, sailing upwind and downwind, tacking and jibing, etc. You also need to know how to handle sails, ropes, winches, etc.
Enroll in a course for boat leaders at one of the authorized schools. You can find a list of schools on the website of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure[^1^]. The course usually lasts for several weeks and consists of theoretical and practical lessons.
Prepare for the theoretical exam. The exam covers topics such as navigation rules and regulations, nautical terminology and symbols, nautical charts and instruments, meteorology and sea conditions, safety at sea and first aid[^2^]. You can find sample questions and answers on the website of the Ministry[^1^] or in various books and online resources.
Take the theoretical exam at one of the authorized centers. The exam is written and consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. You need to score at least 21 points out of 30 to pass[^2^]. The exam fee is 100 kuna (about 13 euros).
Prepare for the practical exam. The exam covers topics such as boat handling and maneuvering under different conditions, sailing techniques and procedures, communication with other vessels and authorities[^2^]. You can practice on your own boat or rent one from the school or another provider.
Take the practical exam at one of the authorized centers. The exam is oral and consists of demonstrating your skills on a boat under the supervision of an examiner. You need to perform all the tasks correctly and safely to pass[^2^]. The exam fee is 200 kuna (about 26 euros).
Receive your license for boat leaders. If you pass both exams successfully, you will receive your license within a few days. The license is valid for life and does not require renewal or additional training[^2^]. The license fee is 100 kuna (about 13 euros).
Celebrate your achievement. Congratulations! You are now a certified boat leader and can sail any vessel up to 30 meters long and up to 12 nautical miles from the coast in Croatia. Enjoy your sailing adventures!
