Longines Heritage 1945 Buy
Yesterday afternoon I told you about the new Longines Heritage 1945, a time-only watch with a story tied to an original slim, flat-bezeled watch that I happen to own. I got to spend more time with this new introduction today and I thought you guys might like to see a few live pictures of it, as well as what it looks like next to the watch that inspired it.

Below you can see the new Longines Heritage 1945 as shown today in Baselworld. It's 40mm and automatic, so right there are two easily identifiable changes from my original watch. The crown is a bit different too, and of course the sub-seconds register is placed a little higher on the dial, which itself is more brushed than matte rose. But, in all, it is a fairly faithful re-edition. What's more, the watch as a stand-alone object (irrespective of the piece from 1945) is attractive, balanced, and well-priced.
Though it is thicker than my piece, the new Longines Heritage 1945 sits really well on the wrist and provides much of that vintage style without the rarity or price tag. For anyone who is curious, powering this watch is the caliber L609 (ETA 2895/2), and though Longines benefits from the vast array of movements from Swatch, there was still not a manually-wound caliber suitable for this piece available.
What makes this watch so great though is the price. The Heritage 1945 will sell for $1,700. That's a heck of a lot of look from a major brand for the price these days, and based on what Longines has told me, the reactions from retailers and press alike have been very strong.
This is the new Longines Heritage 1945, a watch that I was particularly thrilled to see in the metal. I named it as one of my favorites of the show so far in our live report last night, and I have to say this watch really speaks to me. The 1940s is arguably my favorite decade for watch design, and this simple calatrava-style case design with a flat bezel and a curved convex dial is just stunning. And it's now a production piece in the often-wonderful Longines Heritage line. But my connection to this watch goes a little deeper.
This is a Longines watch that I've had in my personal collection for some years now. It dates to, you guessed it, 1945, and has what is truly one of the most stunning case profiles and dials I've seen on any time-only watch from this period. The dial is salmon colored, and the profile is curved. The sub-seconds register is small, and flows with the angle of the dial flawlessly. The hands are blued steel, long and thin. The watch is in extremely good condition for its age, and though it did not cost me a lot of money when I bought it, it has caught the eye of several top collectors with whom I occasionally chill.
I'm spending more time with the new Longines Heritage 1945 later this week at Basel, and they do currently have my watch with them at the booth, so I'll be sure to shoot some side-by-side photos to compare the two. Pricing will be around $2,000, but we'll have official U.S. pricing soon.
Yes! I love the Club 36 (or the 38). This is an imperfect analogy, but to me the Club is the watch the Longines was in 1945. A simple elegant dress piece that feels of the moment but will last long into the future.

One of our favorite new novelties from Baselworld 2017 is the Longines Heritage 1945. As soon as the first piece arrived at Ace, we couldn't wait to get this beauty into the photo studio. The 40mm brushed stainless steel case features a beautiful champagne colored dial. The hour markers are a mix of black printed Arabic numerals and silver plated brass applied indexes. The blue steel hour and minute hands have a slight pop of color, while the hand of the small seconds subdial is black. The tan calf leather strap gives the watch a more casual, daytime look.
Introducing the latest retro timepiece, the Heritage 1945. Unveiled at Baselworld 2017 in March, the new watch is presented in a 40 mm stainless steel case, up from the original 38 mm. Either size would be fine I think, amongst hardcore collectors and new watch enthusiasts alike.
One unique element that was maintained from the 1945 version is the vertically brushed coppery dial, which has a luxurious texture and is curved like the original. Contrasting the straight brushing is an unusually petite small seconds subdial, with a snailed finish, again, like its predecessor.
We have seen that the Longines 1945 is easy to wear, original and has a certain charm. So finding the right outfit to go with it should not be a problem. To pay tribute to its year of production, and the age of my father-in-law who now wears it, I have decided to recreate a 1940s style.
But few brands spend time paying homage to their heritage in general. True, some designers incorporate past style cues or touches into their timepieces, but only a handful stay true to original styles and give consumers a taste of what their original watches. And, among them, Longines do this better than almost any other brand.
The Heritage 1945 encapsulates this ideal, and is exactly what vintage collectors love about Longines. The crisp, clean lines of the flattened bezel, paired with a brushed copper dial, give watch an undeniably period feel.
And, while they tried to stay as true to the original as possible, the Maison also updated certain components to ensure this recreation could keep up with the rigours of modern life. So, whereas the original came fitted with a manual movement, this 1945 is fitted with an automatic calibre that comes with 42 hours of power reserve.
